Our curriculum is balanced and broadly based. It consists of all the activities designed or encouraged in the school to develop the intellectual, personal, social and physical activities in the children.

The arts are an integral part of life at Great Bookham School with excellence for all encouraged through whole school involvement in a variety of different curriculum and extra-curricular activities.

Our carefully planned curriculum ensures progression and coverage and intends that children will develop into happy, confident and independent individuals with a secure foundation in learning that will last throughout their lives.

Please find below further information about the teaching of art and design and music at Great Bookham School alongside our individual curriculum intentions.

Art and Design

At Great Bookham School, our art and design curriculum has been carefully constructed to:

  • Engage, inspires and challenge all pupils.
  • Equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent, create their own works of art, craft and design.
  • Encourage children to think critically to develop a rigorous understanding of the subject as well as understanding how art and design has shaped our history and contributed to culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Each pupil studies art and design through dedicated, timetabled lessons which cover the aims and objectives from the National Curriculum. Throughout their studies, pupils will explore a diverse range of artists, creating and evaluating work in a variety of different mediums including both 2D and 3D artwork.

In addition to pupils' dedicated art and design lessons, a diverse range of clubs run each term enriching all aspects of the curriculum. The children are also encouraged to participate in local, regional and national events and competitions. For example:

Clubs

  • Art Club
  • Clay Club
  • Origami Club

Music

Our music curriculum is designed to increase self-confidence, creativity and a sense of achievement. High-quality teaching and resources inspire children to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians. Children develop a critical engagement with music enabling them to compose and to listen with discrimination to the best music the world of music has to offer.

Music is an integral and firmly embedded part of life at Great Bookham School. Pupils have an extensive range of opportunities to participate in the practice and study of music including dedicated whole class music lessons each week, daily singing as part of assemblies, and annual participation Christmas productions and a full-scale musical theatre production.

For pupils with a heightened interest or aptitude for music, there are flourishing Infant and Junior choirs that rehearse each week, access to individual or small group music tuition to enable pupils to develop proficiency in an instrument of their choice and a diverse range of clubs and activities that are open to all pupils.

A variety of music tuition is available from our instrumental teachers through our strong and long-established partnership with Surrey Arts. For further information about music tuition available, please contact the school office or contact Surrey Arts directly.
